Choosing Tents For Camping

By:

A tent has to be suitable for the terrain and weather you expect to be in when you go camping. You may see 3-season or 4 season tents that are suitable for a range of weather or season and there are also tents made for winter and summer.

Three-season Tents

This is one of the most versatile and popular type of tent you can find. They are made to be suitable for a huge range of weather and terrain. Some even prefer it for use in the cold mountains or in the arctic.

Manufacturers are smart enough to include a vestibule for you to keep your camping gear and have a good coverage of the flysheet. The poles of this type of tent make them very stable which helps to withstand the wind.

While some are freestanding, others are secured with stakes. It is almost always better to have one that is secured with stakes because they keep your tent in place when blown by the wind. Though freestanding tents are much easier to set up and move and they're useful if the terrain is hard rock where stakes are useless. Freestanding tents are also a lot lighter.

Four-season Tents

This type of tent is preferred for hiking in the cold mountains because they offer better protection. They're also more comfortable for winter camping. All this extra protection comes with a price. Four-season tents are not just more expensive in general but they're also heavier with tougher poles that can withstand the additional weight of snow and ice.

The extra poles in four season tents also allow for better distribution of weight on the roof that prevent caving in under excess weight. The lower profile also aid in the resistance to caving in while giving a better retention of heat. The downside is that ventilation may be a bit of a problem.

Summer Tents

Summer tents are a lot cheaper than three-season or four-season tents because they lack the weather protection provided by these other tents. They also weigh a lot less and provide good ventilation which is critical during the summer time for comfort.

There's usually an inner tent made up of nettings or mesh that protect you from insects while aiding ventilation. The flysheet works well against the summer rains but it might struggle in storms like the ones in the mountains.

This tent is probably the least stable of tents when it comes to withstanding the wind. It is a good idea to pitch them in a well sheltered area among the trees are near large rocks that act as windbreaks.

Winter Tents

Winter tents are made with heavy snowfall and strong winds in mind. They are meant for severe weather conditions so they have stronger poles and specialized windows made to withstand the storm.

Most winter tents are dome tents which sheds snow very well and prevent heavy snow accumulation. These heavy duty features almost always mean they're heavy and expensive.
