Choosing Patterns For Doll Clothes

By:

When it comes to patterns for doll clothing, you have several options. The first option is to purchase a ready-made pattern made to fit your doll's height. For example, you will find a number of choices for 18 inch dolls. American Girls, Gotz Precious Day Collection and Madame Alexander dolls are all approximately 18 inches tall. When you have a pattern that is the same height as your dolls, you will need to do some measuring. Of the 18 inch dolls mentioned to above, each has a different bust, neck, shoulder, waist and hip sizes. Some have shorter legs, and others have shorter torsos. You may need to make several modifications to the pattern you buy in order to get precisely the right fit. Other sizes that are accessilbe include 11.5 inch designs for Barbie. If you bought a pattern for Barbie, but want to use it to sew clothing for Skipper, you could make the adjustments. Skipper is petite, has a smaller bustline and a thicker waistline. It would just be simpler to purchase a Skipper-sized pattern to begin with.

The second possibility is to print out patterns for doll clothing using a home printer. Some patterns are obtainable for free. You can download them from the internet and then print them off at home. To get several designs, you will need to pay for the download, but at least you will not have to wait for the pattern to ship. The only drawback to printing your own pattern is the paper. Many seamstresses are accustomed to working with the thinner paper usually used in pattern-making. It is more difficult to pin the fabric to the heavier patterns. Then you could always buy tissue paper made for pattern-making and use the printed pieces only as guides. Another flaw to printing out patterns for doll clothes is that they won't be as precise. The quality will also differ depending on the quality of your printer.

The third possiblility is to build your own pattern. You can do that by taking all of the doll's measurements and using her body as a sort of dress mannequin. Regardless of the option you choose when selecting patterns for doll clothes, it is always a good idea to check the sizing on the each doll before proceding to the final stitches. Working with dolls is simpler in that aspect. You have no problem getting them to poise quietly.
