Choosing Mot And Atl Equipment

By:

Since their authorisation by VOSA for MOT testing, Automated Test Lanes (ATL) have rapidly become the first choice in equipment for MOT Testing Stations. Arguably one of the biggest changes in MOT testing since its introduction in 1960, the ATL is an efficient, accurate, professional and above all, time-saving addition to the tools available for garage proprietors.

An ATL consists of shaker plates to assess suspension and steering, and incorporate roller brake testers, in addition Headlamp Beam Testers can also be added. Using software the brake test is fully automated and linked up to a PC; the software is operated via prompts throughout the test and provides a printout of the results. Suspension and steering tests measure wear on the components and are performed in conjunction with visual inspection.

An ATL system is designed for One Person Testing (OPT) and VOSA authorises these systems specifically for this use. While it is possible to upgrade your existing facilities to encompass OPT, installing an ATL has significant advantages. Pre-authorised for OPT use, an ATL should not mean alterations to your premises, or further authorisations by VOSA.

The full advantage of OPT itself should be apparent quickly to existing testing stations. MOTs can be conducted by a single individual, freeing up the assistant formerly required to complete a test legally, for other work around the premises. Experienced testers will be familiar with the process and an ATL will involve little or no training for the operative to become familiar with the system. The automated nature of an ATL also has the advantage that results have a higher rate of consistency. The tests can also be completed in less time, overall an ATL will increase productivity and efficiency in the MOT process, and in the work of the garage as a whole.

An ATL MOT bay is also designed to be capable of future additions to the system, and as such they are increasingly seen as being future-proof when it comes to possible changes and additions to VOSA requirements. An ATL will not only decrease costs in the short term, but should have long term benefits for any garage. These savings are one reason that while the ATL is not yet compulsory under VOSA regulations, the systems are now common throughout the UK.

To continue to maintain a competitive and efficient service an ATL is seen as a real necessity for many companies, both large and small. Class 4 and Class 7 ATL MOT systems are available and will not normally involve major changes to your workshops. They can, in most cases, be incorporated into existing layouts. Suppliers will be able to offer advice on this and to help you choose the right system to install. In order to maintain your place in the market, if you have not already considered the installation of an ATL, now may be the time!
