Choosing Kiva Ladders For Unique Western Home Decorating

By:

Kiva ladders or Wooden Indian log ladders are rustic accessories that work great for enhancing southwestern style in your home. While traveling or visiting the southwest you will surely notice that Indian log ladders are the most recognizable symbols of Native style design and art, used to create unique, rustic and western style interior design. Kiva ladders are decorative wood ladders usually fashioned from pine logs that have been scraped by hand. The ladder rungs are fitted together into the upright poles, and rawhide lacing is used to lash each joint together in a cross pattern. The ladder is narrower at the top than it is at the base, giving it a measure of height.

One great way to add the pueblo look and feel in your room, without actually having pueblo designs, is to use the same simple, pueblo ladder or kiva wood ladder. The ladders will add a subtle but authentic pueblo or western look in the area. A kiva ladder also creates a terrific way to showcase a couple of your favorite southwest rugs or throw blankets. Other southwestern style accessories that look wonderful with wood ladders are Mexican style throws, Native pottery and drums, rustic dough bowls and rustic lamps with rawhide lamp shades. Ladders can also be used to emphasize special designs you may like such as the kokopelli or other pueblo designs. The use of the kiva ladder as a way to display trinkets and nick-nacks will bring to life the western decor in your interior design, add beautiful colors, and give the ladder a greater sense of purpose and function.

There is something intriguing about village style homes made of adobe with their kiva ladders on the roofs. This image has become an icon in southwestern interior design and style. Many homes in the southwestern states are built to imitate the style of the early pueblos, and the kiva ladder is always an integral part. Pueblo designs are found on rugs, dolls, pottery, paintings, art, and rustic furniture. And, the rustic wooden ladders have become popular in cabins, lodge style homes and also anywhere people like native or southwestern design style.

Use your imagination. There is no limitation to how rustic ladders can be used. You can design a unique display or book shelf by combining two ladders together and connecting them with boards in the middle. You most likely already have some rugs you can use and put a small table beside it or a Native drum and you will have created a unique and eye catching design.

A lot people also use kiva ladders to hang Native American style blankets to cover up with during those chilly winter nights. You might use kiva ladders to display throw blankets or quilts in your guest rooms when not being used. Try using kiva style decorative ladders in each of your rooms, in the same way or similarly without it looking overly done. So, if you want a truly unique Native Indian style element to use in your interior design, use rustic wooden kiva ladders.
