Choosing Character Nursery Furniture - Some Thoughts

By:

Most parents will opt for a cot/cot bed, a wardrobe or storage unit and some form of changing table or dresser. Those who want to buy more furniture can also choose from shelving, toy storage, general storage and various kinds of seats and benches including nursing chairs that match the basic furniture.

Nursery furniture design

Some parents like to buy a classic furniture design for the nursery that will suit their child when they are older. Others like to make sure that their nursery appeals to the child when they are young and therefore choose furniture that is decorated with popular characters. These characters may be from popular TV shows such as Bob the Builder or Thomas the Tank Engine. They may be classic characters from books and films such as Disney characters and Winnie the Pooh. They can even simply be just general characters such as fairies, princesses, spacemen or animals.

The point here is that buying character decorated nursery furniture really can make a nursery belong to a child. They will know that this is their special room because it is decorated with things that they can relate to.

How long does character nursery furniture last?

Some parents worry about buying nursery furniture with a character design because they think that their child will outgrow it too quickly. The fact is that children will -- at some stage -- feel that they are too grown up to have their baby furniture in the nursery and may ask for a more adult design. Or, they may simply feel that they no longer like the character and want a change.

This can happen at various stages but is most likely to occur when the child reaches school age where their interests will develop to the next stage. So, nursery furniture with a character design will still last a good few years. And, parents that buy a more classic design may well find at this stage that they need to change that too in any case.

Buy safely

Any furniture that is designed for use by a baby or young child has to be safe. It is the responsibility of the parents to check out the furniture from a safety angle before they buy it. Good indicators here include Kite Marks and CE ratings -- these kinds of ratings (from institutions such as the British Standards Institute) show that the furniture has passed specific guidelines that makes it safe for use in a nursery. Parents should also make sure that the furniture is stable and well-constructed -- if making it up from flat packs then extra care should be taken to make sure that is put together correctly.

Conclusion

There are few young children out there that wont appreciate having their own special room as they grow up that is decorated with their favourite characters. Making the nursery a fun place to be will help any child develop and grow and will get them used to sleeping in their own room which is an issue with may parents!
