Choosing A Popular Fathers Day Gift

By:

If everyone jumped off a cliff, would you? It was always pretty annoying when parents and teachers threw you that line, because let's face it, bunking off a lesson because your mate thought it was a good idea is hardly in the same league as following them to certain death over a cliff edge. But for the purposes of this article, I reckon it's bang on the money.

I'm talking of course about popular Fathers Day gifts. You know the ones. All the old hat, outdated and overworked gifts that you'll find on every shop display in every store. Yes, dads hate fuss and yes, he'd probably be happy just putting his feet up for a day. But seeing as how he always leant you a tenner when your mum said "no", he deserves more.

With that in mind, here are the top 5 most popular Fathers Day gifts you can buy, but really shouldn't...

Socks and Pants
For once, leave the pants and socks to your old man; it's time he bought his own underwear. For one, themed underwear is just weird unless you're nine-years-old and the underwear in question are World's Best Dad socks. Number two, read number one again.

Golf-Related Item
The problem with golf is that there are only two groups of people; those who can play it and those who can't. Those that can are on TV at the Ryder Cup, those that can't are sat at home watching it, like your dad. Getting him a golf-themed gift only draws attention to this fact and his ego may not take it.

Beer
The only dads that would appreciate a 4-pack for Fathers Day are probably already as wide as they are tall; they don't need any more. In fact the only time this gift is acceptable is when the recipient is your mate and you're both students and broke. If you really must, throw in a beer-themed card.

Shaving Kit
The fact that aeroplanes give these out for free should tell you something. But still, wander into stores around Fathers Day and there they are, all wrapped up in speciality gift boxes as if Christmas has come early. Let's be realistic, a razor, shaving cream and a cardboard box does not a Fathers Day gift make.

Neck Tie
Shocking as this may be, the neck tie is in fact the most popular Fathers Day gift ever. And for that reason alone we need to bin it. From formal style options to ones slapped head to toe in Homer Simpson, they have all been done a thousand times over. And your dad probably looked an idiot in every one.
