If you've recently completed a degree in medicine and are looking to start your own small (or large) practice, one of the biggest favors you can do for yourself is to hire a medical marketing professional.

You could be the greatest doctor in the whole wide world, and if you can't market yourself it won't make a lick of difference. If you look at the NBA for example, in the late 70s the league was suffering immensely and was on the verge of collapse. But along came players like Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan. Now, there were some great players before them. Think Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Elgin Baylor and Oscar Robertson. But the NBA did a much better job of marketing their new stars and it changed the league forever. Looking solely at the players' salaries these days as compared to those other players you can see that a huge change took place, and a lot of that was due to the way the league marketed the players, and the way the players marketed themselves ('It must be the shoes!'). The same principle holds true in the medical field.

The important thing is that you choose wisely when hiring a medical marketing company or professional. Obviously your budget is going to be a huge factor in who you can hire. So make sure that you set aside some money for marketing and advertising. This is one of the downfalls of new businesses. They just don't place enough emphasis on marketing and advertising.

A couple of things you will definitely want to look in to are how many other companies they've worked with and who those companies are. Finding someone with a lot of experience is a definite plus. And if you are a medical doctor, you won't want to hire someone that has only ever worked with video game companies before.

You should also look into their online portfolio. Here you can get an idea of the feel and style that the company or individual usually produces, and decide whether or not their style will be a fit for your business. They should give you access to their previous web and print designs as well as any websites and other design work they've done.

Another thing that is important is finding someone who can help you define your brand and come up with entire marketing campaigns for your business.
