Choosing A King Sized Bed: How Hard Can It Be?

By:

Did you know there are actually four different sizes of King beds? Manufacturers are not always helpful or forthcoming about this; after all, they want us to buy their product. It's usually up to you to decide how much space you have in your room, if you need more length or would like a wider bed.

Before you even step into a store, step into your bedroom with measuring tape in hand. Get ready to mark off the space with these numbers (and your desires) in mind.

For something so simple, it's a bit surprising there is still no real consensus on the sizes of King beds. In general though, most companies refer to a Western King also as a California King. It is usually four inches longer than an Eastern King, which is also sometimes called a Standard King. It is usually four inches shorter than the Western King, but four inches wider. Four inches may not seem like a lot, but measure it out in your bedroom and you may be surprised. Some people find their nightstands won't fit along side an Eastern King, while others realize they wouldn't have enough room to walk around the end of the bed.

Your personal comfort is a factor as well; do you like the feeling of "sprawling" out in bed, or do you need a mattress that is long enough for your legs?

The term "usually" needs to be included, because there are variations. Some claim a California King is only 80 inches long, while most state theirs are 84 inches. And there is a size called a Grand King, which is a whopping 98 inches long (for the NBA no doubt).

Another tip: be sure any headboard you like is measured to know if it will work with your mattress of choice. Just like beds, headboards come in different sizes.

Another issue which a lot of us forget about until it's too late is the cost and availability of bed linens. If you have to spend hundreds of dollars ordering sheets that fit, you may regret your choice if it strains your budget.

The takeaway: as always, measure twice (and save yourself the headache).
