Choosing A Good Plastic Surgeon - Some Tips For Prospective Patients

When a person has decided to undergo plastic surgery it is important to find the right plastic surgeon. Deciding to have a surgical procedure such as plastic surgery is not one that should be entered into without doing the research to make an informed decision. There are some steps every patient should do before undergoing a plastic surgery procedure.

Compile a List of Plastic Surgeons
When deciding to have plastic surgery every patient should compile a list of plastic surgeons they would like to have a consultation with. A patient can begin their list by asking their doctors, nurses or friends for recommendations. Additionally, a patient can find a list of plastic surgeons through the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Check Credentials
When the list of plastic surgeons is complete it is time to begin checking credentials. To begin a patient should make sure that the plastic surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This step is extremely important as any doctor is can perform a procedure. However, if the plastic surgeon is board certified it means they have successfully completed additional training and have taken written and oral tests to specialize in plastic surgery. Additionally, a patient should check the plastic surgeons record with the states medical licensing board.

Ask the Plastic Surgeon Questions
An informed patient will be armed with questions during the initial consultation. Some of the questions that should be asked are about the doctors hospital privileges and how often they perform the procedure that is going to be done. If the doctor does not have hospital privileges this should be cause for alarm even if the procedure is being performed at an outpatient facility. A patient should also choose a doctor that performs the desired plastic surgery procedure on a daily basis.
