Choosing A Fish Tank

By:

As with many hobbies or interests we all start out as novices. This is true if you want to buy some fish and you need an aquarium to put them in. This article will look at some tips you can use when deciding which fish tank should you choose.

1. Space for your aquarium - How much room do you have for a aquarium. Buying a large fish tank for a small space may take away from the enjoyment if you are always bumping into it. Fish tanks can add to the natural beauty of a room when they are allowed to blend into it. You want to know the amount of space you are working with before you shop for a fish tank.

2. Shape of your aquarium - Consider the shape of the tank. Taller hexagonal and octagonal tanks are very popular, but it is a personal choice, just like anything you buy. and what appeals to you. Longer rectangular tanks are the most common and appeal to people who are doing this as a hobby.

3. Size of your aquarium - If you are new to fish and fish tanks it is advisable to start with a small tank. You will spend less and it will give you less work to keep it up. Small tanks can be anywhere from 10 to 20 gallons and cost you $10-$40 depending on the size and shape. If you find that you love fish and do not mind the upkeep you can always upgrade to a bigger tank at a later date.

4. Where to Purchase - Where do you buy one? Of course pet stores and retail stores are the logical place. Flea markets, garage sales, eBay, and Craig's List offer good deals as well. Using the internet for research will give you some quick ideas on cost and style. Specialist websites can offer a wide assortment of aquariums to choose from.

Other things to think about include:

- Buy your fish after your aquarium is set up and the water is at room temperature.

- Keep your water at a warm temperature. Most fish do well at 76-79 degrees.

- Add some colored gravel to help hold the tank and plants down. Darker colors tend to bring out the colors of your fish better.

- Water weighs 9 pounds per gallon so be sure and get a fish tank that is sturdy enough.

- Keep your tank clean or get a quality filtration system. Algae build up can be a problem and you want to spend the time necessary to keep you tank clean and fish safe.

There are lots of things to think about when you are deciding on the right fish tank. If you do it right from the start keeping fish will be a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
