Sweet 16 parties are an American tradition. It's typically a huge party with lots of music, dancing, and birthday gifts. One Hispanic custom is a big party for girls when they turn 15: the Quinceanera. The word Quinceanera has two meanings, it refers to the girl who has reached the age of 15 and it is also refers to the sweet 15 party given in her honor. The dress for the sweet 15 party, just like in American coming-of-age party, becomes one of the evening's most important components.

Sweet 15 dresses are typically white or pink. Today, the Quinceaera chooses the color and style of her dress. Dress makers design these "sweet 15" gowns in every color imaginable, providing the birthday girl with a wide array of choices.

Usually a sweet 15 has a tight bodice and a flared skirt. This dress design is meant to show the transition of the Quinceanera from a nina (girl) to a senorita (miss); however, in social circles she will have to turn 21 before she will be referred to as a senorita. The Quinceanera is a coming-of-age ceremony; it honors a girl when she moves into womanhood from childhood. It is important not to offend older relatives, so it should be elegant and modest, and at the same time it should be attractive in a way that will show off the honored girl's womanhood.

The Sweet 15 dress should be beautiful with lovely Spanish designs and have a diaphanous ball gown style, but the girl wearing it should be comfortable in it to dance. Traditionally the Quinceaera has a special dance with her dad, her Godfather, and her date (Chambelan). There will also be fun, upbeat dancing with the girl's friends. A sweet 15 dress should be eye-catching enough to make a girl stand out, but not so constricting that it keeps her from dancing.
