Choosing A Contractor: Your Most Important Home Improvement Decision

By:

Despite the proliferation of do it yourself home improvement programs that have been on our television sets at least since Bob Vila hosted This Old House, the simple fact remains that the vast majority of people are not qualified to perform major repairs or upgrades to their house. Modern homes are just far too complicated for this. As a result, most people rely on contractors to take charge of the home renovation process.

Whether unfair or not, contractors have a car salesman-like reputation for being unscrupulous people to deal with. There is certainly potential for abuse in the contracting process considering that most people simply do not know enough about home renovations to be able to keep a careful eye on the work of the contractor and the companies he or she brings in to do work on one's home. Contractor horror stories are abundant and can be found easily on the Internet. These horror stories can include everything from overcharging to theft by the contractor or subcontractors, and contractors who leave their clients without kitchens or bathrooms for weeks at a time while the contractors are unreachable doing who knows what. From a common sense perspective, because a contractor will be setting the tone and the pace for all the work that gets done on your home, it is absolutely crucial to hire the right person for your needs.

One of the first things you will find about choosing a contractor is that there are simply too many to choose from. Getting a contractor's license (if one is even required) is considered fairly easy by many people, and it is certainly possible to hire a person who doesn't have much idea of what he or she is doing. The most certain way to avoid this is to get a referral for a contractor from a friend or family member whose judgment you trust and whose expectations on the work of the contractor in terms of reliability and punctuality are similar to your own. In other words, if you are a buttoned-up military type, it is probably best not to get a referral from your laid-back hippie cousin.

If you can't get a referral, you are already operating in dangerous territory. Contractors may give higher priority to work on the homes of referred clients, knowing that these clients are likely to lead to more referrals and so on and so on. Unless your home is absolutely falling apart, it is best to hold out for a reliable referral to a good contractor rather than put your home renovation project in the hands of someone you cannot really trust. If you must find a contractor without a referral, the website Angie's List claims particular expertise with contractors in its ads, but you must take the same caveats using this website as you would with online reviews on Amazon and other sites. Government and industry agencies that regulate and assist contractors may maintain lists of registered, licensed, and insured contractors, as well as complaint lists, which can assist in making your decision.
