Choose Barbour Jackets

Barbour jackets is just the thing on a cold day in winter but even one of these warm and great looking Barbour jackets would not be your first choice for climbing The Himalayas.

When you see photographs or film of present day mountaineers climbing the great snow-capped peaks of the world they are wearing highly specialised climbing clothes. Modern synthetic material and thermal underwear are all used to protect the climber from extreme cold temperatures and icy winds.

It wasn't always like that and Victorian era climbers who started off the whole business of climbing for pleasure would often set off in the same clothes they might be wearing for a jaunt in the park on a winter's day. A few years ago the perfectly preserved body of a well-known climber was found near the peak of that most unforgiving peak, The Matterhorn. He had set off to climb this mountain eighty years ago and never managed to return.

After so many years hidden from view by ice and snow his body was revealed by a freakish warm few years and an avalanche. Apart from a quilted jacket beneath a waterproof canvas jacket, he was wearing plus fours and two pairs of thick socks.
His quilted jacket may have been some help but getting caught in a sudden blizzard of icy snow must have been unbearable and of course eventually murderous.

A quilted jacket and in particular Barbour jackets will be a great help in keeping you warm but even Barbour would not suggest it is designed for climbing through snow to altitudes of twenty thousand feet or more.

Although quilts have been made into blankets and jackets over the centuries, making a quilt bedspread reached its peak in the United States of America in the early years of the settlers arriving from Europe. In many cases it was a way to remind themselves of the lands they had left behind. The quilts were almost limitless in size as one square was added to another. Sometimes the making of a quilt spread over generations as daughter continued after motherwho then passed it on to her child and so on. Often the different squares of quilt told individual stories like the birth of a child in the family or the passing away of another.

The quilt became a storyline spanning the generations of one family and consequently they have become of historical interest. In the United States there are museums dedicated to the quilt and at The Victoria and Albert museum in London there is a whole exhibition on quilts.

If the original quilts were made asbedspreads or blankets for the bed, it is logical to assume that on freezing mornings the owner would wrap it around when getting up to light the fire. The next step would be to make a jacket from quilted material and from medieval times this is what happened.
