Choose A Vent Hood That Adds Functional Design

By:

Vent hoods that provide exhaust over the cooktop may seem like the most functional and least interesting element of kitchen design. There are actually a wide variety of options in vent or range hood design, so you can customize them for almost any decor. When youre doing a kitchen renovation project, you will need to decide whether you want your vent hood to blend in or to stand out as its own design element. Below are some considerations in selecting a vent hood.

Size: You want the vent size to correspond to the scale of the cooktop. If you have a very large cooktop, you will need a correspondingly large hood which is therefore less likely to easily conceal. If your cooktop is a normal size you can get by with a fairly small hood. New technology allows them to be slim and streamlined while functioning as effectively as older models.

Over Islands: If your cooktop is on a kitchen island, you have special design considerations. A vent hood that is too low can effectively cut the room in two and obstruct visibility from one part to another. If youre doing a kitchen remodel, be sure your vent hood is low enough to provide ventilation but high enough that it doesnt become an obstacle.

Stainless Steel: The traditional choice for vent hoods, stainless steel can give your kitchen a sleek, modern look. Adding curves or color to the steel can create a completely new feeling that allows it to coordinate with the rest of the kitchen.

Mantel Style: If your vent hood is going to be visible, especially because of an oversized cooktop, think about making it look like a fireplace mantel. This is a particularly popular option in traditional kitchens. For example, it can give an old-fashioned appearance to a country or French country style kitchen.

Hidden Away: Concealing your dishwasher and refrigerator behind paneling that matches your cabinets is a popular design option; it gives the kitchen a unified look. Such panels can also conceal the vent hood, making it resemble the upper cabinets.
