Cholesterol - Learn About Convenient Resources

By:

Most people may think of worrying things whenever they hear the word cholesterol though they should not since as soon as they learn what it is and in what manner cholesterol threatens their health they will learn to adjust so that they can continue maintaining good health. To be certain, cholesterol is alcohol and steroids united and this mixture is called sterol, plus, it is also a fat that is called a lipid. Also, most of the cholesterol that we have in our bodies is produced by the liver while the remaining quantities are in realty ingested from what we eat.

As far as suffering from elevated cholesterol levels, the main culprit is saturated fat that incites the liver to create large quantities of cholesterol, and trans fats also create the same kind of effect. Though cholesterol is also contained in animal foods, there is no cholesterol in vegetables and any plant foods, and when in fat form it does not get dissolved in blood. So, you need to use some other substance in order to get the fatty cholesterol to dissolve and that is where lipoproteins enter into the scene. Lipoproteins are special kind of carriers that can be either low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) with LDL being bad for the body while the HDL is good for the body.

It is LDL cholesterol that is the most important carrier of bad cholesterol and when its intensity gets up, the walls of your arteries can fill with plaque that will cause a narrowing of the arteries. This in turn will impair free flow of blood to essential parts of the body. And when blood does not attain vital organs like the heart, you could be at risk of suffering a stroke or a heart attack. To enjoy good health, you will need to keep the levels of it at under 100 mg/dl.

On the other hand, HDL or high-density lipoproteins will send back cholesterol to the liver in which it will be excreted and thus there will be less chance of plaque build-up in the arteries, and that will result in inferior health risks. It follows then that in order to have good health, you need more HDL and less LDL. The best way to augment HDL is by doing exercise and also by eliminating or severely lowering ingestion of fats, more particularly saturated fats and trans fats.
Thus, the right assessment of cholesterol is that if it is in the form of HDL then its level has to be high while if it is LDL then its level must be kept as low as possible.
