Choices In Metal Detectors

By:

If you are a first time buyer for a metal detector it can be daunting to find the right one for you. Here are a few ideas based on first hand experience with several types of devices.

Metal Detector for the Beginner:

If you are a beginner in the world of metal detecting, I recommend the Garret Ace 250. This device is perfect for those doing basic coin and jewelery searches, it has a limited battery drain and excellent quality performance. Between the Garret Ace 250 or 150, I would advise the 250, it offers more in performance and user features, with a limited price difference.

The Intermediate Explorer

If you have been doing metal detecting searches for a while now and decided it is a good fit for you, then skip the mid-level detectors out there, instead choose a high-end metal detector and get more for you money. Minelab Explorer Series has been a favorite of mine for all purpose coin and jewelry hunts. I know that this choice will have some other enthusiasts up in arms, but I have found the Explorer series to do very well in mineralized areas.

The Experienced Metal Detector

For you I would say the Safari or Explorer instruments will do nicely.

Metal Detectors for Water

Both the Whites PI and Minelab Excalibur are great for this, to testify to this, they are frequently seen in use on the beach. For those fresh water enthusiasts, White's Beach Hunter has gotten notice. If you find yourself in ares littered with trash, it is best to choose a VLF device, such as White's Beach Hunter or Minelab Excalibur because of the incredible ability to determine trash for treasure.

Beach Hunting Specific Metal Detectors

For strictly beach combing, try the Minelab Explorer or Sovereign for best results. The Sovereign is excellent for this type of search because it has the ability to chest mount your controls and provides you a longer cable than most. This gives you the chance to follow a lead into the shallow water without worry. Be aware however, that neither of these machines is submersible.

Metal Detecting for Gold Nuggets

VLF machines are best fort his type of prospecting, I recommend the White's Goldmaster GMT or 4B. Their ease of use will make you fall involve with them, and it is fantastic at picking up the small bits of gold that you crave. A used Goldmaster metal detector will cost you mush less than a Eureka, but it is also a suitable device.

Hopefully this brief lineup will help in your search of the appropriate metal detector for your needs.
