Chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease is very common among men and women under the age of 25. If left untreated, Chlamydia can cause really serious problems. Studies have shown that approximately more than three million people around the globe get afflicted by Chlamydia each year.

An organism called "Chlamydia Trachomatis" causes the Chlamydia infection. It is the most widespread sexually transmitted disease. Individuals who are sexually active with multiple partners are at a very high risk of developing Chlamydia. It transmits from one person to another through sexual activity. It can even pass on from a mother to her child during his/ her birth. It can be acquired together with syphilis or/ and gonorrhea, so those who have been suspected of having one STD must be tested for the other as well.

On the basis of its signs and symptoms, very often, Chlamydia matches it reputation of being silent. More than 75 percent of the afflicted people do not experience any symptoms. However, the remaining 25 percent do experience some mild signs. The symptoms of Chlamydia are generally seen within the first one to three weeks. In women the most common signs are a burning sensation while urinating, vaginal bleeding or discharge or pain in the lower abdominal area. While the symptoms in men are pain while urinating, itching or burning in or around the penis, discharge from the penis or swelling in the testicles.

The most commonly prescribed treatment for Chlamydia is a course of some particular antibiotics. It is recommended to refrain from sex unless and until the infection has cleared completely. It is advised for both the sexual partners to be treated even if only one of them has been suspected with the Chlamydia; this will prevent the infection from passing on any further and will also keep them away from all of its symptoms!
