Chiropractor Wheaton Il | Migraines Are More Than Just Painful

By:

Virtually everyone gets headaches, although rumor has it that there are a lucky few who do not. Regardless of the burning envy the rest of us may feel towards them, they should be envied, not reviled. However, headaches are not migraines, and migraines, for those unlucky enough to suffer from them, are nothing to be sneezed at.

What Causes Migraines?-
In fact, sneezing while one is suffering from a migraine can lead to everything from even worse pain to vomiting. The pain itself can cause that, but sharp, sudden movements are very likely to exacerbate the condition. This is true regardless of the level and intensity a given sufferer experiences.

As it is fairly difficult to know the exact moment a person is going to get hit with a migraine and stuff them into a scanner right before, and as no one has developed a PET scanner that one can wear while going about daily life, the exact causes are not 100% clear. However, constricting and stretching of blood vessels in the skull are definitely part of the issue; the vessels constricting due to a range of factors and then suddenly expanding, leading to regular headache pain. Why some headaches become migraines, or even if they are as related as they seem, has yet to be determined.

Triggers -
While precise causes are yet to be determined, many things have been identified that trigger migraines. This is good. They differ from person to person and even from experience to experience. This is bad, but at least it is a start.

For many people, like arthritis suffers, weather is a trigger or at least part of the package. This is one of the most problematic aspects, because there is very little one can do to avoid low-pressure systems. At the same time, being cognizant even of the triggers that cannot be avoided can help to mitigate some of the more debilitating aspects of severe migraines.

Other significant triggers of migraines tend to be stress and various foods. Sadly, for many, chocolate will induce them, leading to the question of whether the treatment is worse than the condition, but that is a decision each person must make on their own.

Treatment -
While there are plenty of over-the-counter analgesics, as well as prescriptions that help to treat the pain, many of them do so by essentially rendering the sufferer unconscious. While this does work, it still leaves large holes in a person's life. This is why chiropractic treatment can be so valuable. The goal is to try to determine the main proximate causes and find ways to avoid migraine recurrence, through treating the body as a system, rather than just looking at the pain.

Chiropractic adjustment and massage can certainly help relieve many of the immediate impacts of stress and reduce the likelihood of all the tension causing a blockage that leads to pain. By working holistically, chiropractic treatment can also help the client to determine what triggers migraines, whether it is one thing or a combination and depending on the results, work up a plan to avoid them. They may not go away altogether, but any day that doesn't have to be spent lying quietly in a dark room is a good one. If that's how you prefer to spend your time, that's something else entirely.
