Chiropractic As An Alternative Treatment For Tension Headaches

By:

There are many available treatments for tension headaches. There are medications, exercise, or even having your loved one massaging your temple in an attempt to relieve pressure that you are feeling. The condition can often be depilating and frustrating for a patient. So many people come to my office for back pain but never consider chiropractic care as an alternative treatment for tension headaches.

A tension headache is generally a mild to moderate pain that's often described as feeling like a tight band around your head. It is the most common type of headache, and yet its causes aren't well understood. It feel s as if muscle contractions are responsible for your head pain, which is why this type of headache is generally referred to as a tension headache, though experts no longer think muscle contractions are the cause, I found addressing the soft tissues is crucial for a successful outcome.

Chiropractic care is effective as a treatment for tension headaches for a number of reasons. A chiropractic adjustment which re-aligns the spinal bones in the neck, positions the spine back into the correct anatomical position. When this is accomplished, there is less strain on the supporting tissues, specifically muscles, and therefore releases the tension in the neck and head region. It is very important to release the strain and stress in the area and this helps significantly with the problem of tension headaches.

A second reason chiropractic care is effective for treating tension headaches is that when the chiropractic adjustment is delivered by the chiropractor, the circulation and blood flow to the head region shows improvement. Research has shown that just one chiropractic adjustment lowered blood pressure in the cervical region by an average of seven points on the blood pressure scale. This was more effective in lowering the blood pressure than the two leading blood pressure medications combined. This is also a natural and safe way to improve circulation, blood flow and lower blood pressure. The combination of these circumstances relieves the tension of the headache as well as increases the healing capacity with the head and neck area to give an effective alternative treatment.

A final point to consider is also the nervous system is affected by the chiropractic adjustment. The nervous system controls all aspects of bodily functions including the dilation of blood vessels and the contraction and relaxation of the muscle tissue. The next time you are having a headache, keep in mind there is natural, safe and effective treatment through chiropractic care. Give a chiropractor a call in your area and find relief.
