Chip Pan Fire Accidents: Time To Make Them A Thing Of The Past

By:

As with any cooking method there are a few rules to remember. You should teach all members of your family the basic rules of kitchen safety. There should be an escape plan in place and a regular practice of this escape plan for all members to automatically remember.

Chip pan fire accidents have risen drastically in the past few years. Over thirty-one deaths and thousands of injuries have occurred in the past year and there are still more tragedies that are likely to occur. We must educate the children in schools and the adults in workshops or in visits to the fire station.

The number one culprit is cooking with oil. Oil has a very high flammability rate and can catch fire very quickly. People have tried to put out chip fires themselves when really they should make sure everyone is out of the house and all members are accounted for. Do not try to put the fire out yourself. It can get out of hand too quickly and you will be badly burned. Just concentrate on getting out of the house and make sure that no one tries to re-enter the house to save a pet or a piece of property.

When using a chip pan, fill it with oil only one-third full. Never leave the pot unattended nor leave a child to watch it for you. All flammable products such as curtains and oven gloves should be well out of the way as well. Also, do not put water onto the oil or try and put a lid on the pan. Do not have a messy or crowded work place, when dealing with boiling oil. When the chips have cooked, place them on a plate to cool and eat at the table, not near the stove.

Actually, the chip pans should be put in the rubbish. They are far too dangerous. In Canada recently, a young girl was in her flat making Ollie Bollen, a Dutch fried doughnut. The pan caught fire and she was going to throw it outside into the snow. She grabbed her oven gloves, picked up the pan and walked toward the door. She tripped and fell on a loose rug, and spilled the boiling pan and fire all over her face and body. She managed to get out of the apartment with the pan, down a flight of stairs and went running and screaming to her neighbours. They found her lying in the snow, crying in pain. She is still undergoing skin grafts and therapy.

There are wonderful new electrical fryers which can be bought now and they make wonderful chips and fish and anything else you wish to fry. There are levels to mark the amount of oil, a basket to put the food into, and it is thermostatically controlled to the proper heat. Unplug it when you are finished. Once again make sure the product meets the BSI quality control for safety. It will take the worry out of cooking chips forever more.
