Haw Par Villa is a Chinese mythological amusement park in the vibrant city-state of Singapore. In English the meaning of Haw Par Villa is Villa of the Tiger and the Leopard. Haw Par Villa, was formerly referred to as Tiger Balm Gardens because it was originally created by Aw Boon Haw in 1937. He built this place as an abode for his younger brother by the name of Aw Boon Par. They are the two brothers who created the balm which has become famous the world over.
He then built a theme park that depicts various Chinese values, history, legends, folklore and also Confucian ideology. Many statues at the park bring to life various Chinese folk stories. In fact, the park is well known for these awe-inspiring statues, the many colourful sculptures and its wide variety of exhibits.
Among the wide variety of attractions here is a massive scowling gorilla that is said to weigh more than 7,000-kg. There is also a model of the Statue of Liberty. Another highlight is a monstrous sumo wrestler. Some other features are statues of a panda, koala bear and ostrich. For any visitor, a must visit is the Ten Courts of Hell that depict all sorts of gory fates that befall sinners. It is indeed a lesson on morality by way of deterrence. There are also water gardens with many varieties of fish and also Thai dancers.
Among some of the new additions to the premises is the Jade house, which displays a vast selection of Jades belonging to Aw Family, gathered over time. It is located close to the main entrance. Another new addition is the Tiger Car, which is a vintage car in the shape of a tiger. It is said that the car is a replica of the 'Tiger Car' that was owned by the legendary Mr. Aw Boon Haw.
