China's Production Of Copper And Aluminum In June Hit A Record High

By:

China's copper production in June hit a record high. In the market context of adequate supply of concentrates and the increasing copper prices, the smelting enterprises continue to increase the production.

However, due to the tight supply of copper scrap and copper concentrate supply has declined caused by the Japan reconstruction, China's copper production in the coming months can not be expected to remain at such a high level. China is the world's largest metal consumer. This will awaken China's long-silent copper import and export, providing support for the global price.

The data of the National Bureau of Statistics show that China's refined copper output in June increased 12 percent to 477 thousand tons compared with the same period of last year. The data also show that in the first half of this year, China's refined copper production increased 14% to 2.64 million tons.

Analysts said that despite the traditional consumer off-season is approaching, but the increase of refining charges is the main reason that smelter capacity will be maintained at a high level.
Refining charges are paid by the miner to the copper smelters for the cost of processing copper concentrate into refined copper. Normally, when supply increases or operating refining capacity decreases, refining costs will increase.

Traders said in the June that the refining charges are 11.7-12.8 cents per pound, higher than the price of $ 72-77 per ton agreed by the Chinese smelters and the world's mining companies in the first half of this year. The refining costs are 7.2-7.7 cents.

Analysts said, "Over the past few months, the smelter maintain a high load operation is the most natural thing." Chinese refined copper output in March hit 470,000 tons, and in April reached 454,000 tons, mainly due to the rising costs of refining and smelting and the abundant inventory of copper concentrate.

The imports of China copper scrap in June was 420,000 tons, an increase of 20%. But experts of the industry estimates that in the second half, the copper scrap shipments to China will be reduced. Because of the economic recovery, Europe, India, South Korea and other countries will also be purchasing.

The data of the National Bureau of Statistics also show that China's primary aluminum output in June rose 13.3% to a record high of 1.59 million tons. From the January to the June of this year, the country's primary aluminum production increased 5.6 percent to 8.64 million tons.
