Chimney Cleaning Is Necessary To Burn A Fire Safely

By:

When the weather is starting to turn warmer, it is a good time to clean your fireplace and chimney. Each time you use your fireplace during the winter you were allowing soot and ash build up on the inside walls of the chimney. If you leave this mess on the inside of the chimney too long, you are asking for a fire during the next cold season. You could end up with a roman candle right in your home. If you hear popping sounds coming from the chimney and not the burning logs when you use the fireplace the next time, it is probably from this build up. It only takes a minute for dangerous creosote to ignite and start a blaze inside the chimney that can shoot quickly out the top.

This fire could engulf your home quickly especially if there are any cracks anywhere in the brickwork where the flames can lick there way through to combustible materials. The fire raging out the top of the chimney could ignite shingles and set the roof on fire before you have time to get the fire department there to put it out. Your home be on fire on the inside and the outside at the same time and there might be very little you can do to fight a blaze this size.

When it is time to clean your fireplace and chimney, you should get a professional chimney sweep to do the job. They will take care of whatever needs to be done with your chimney and the fireplace also. If the chimney needs repairs in order to burn safely, they will be able to fix it for you or recommend someone who can. It is very dangerous to use a fireplace that has loose or missing bricks or even missing mortar between the bricks. This can allow heat and hot ash to get in the crack and start a fire even if there is no chimney fire.

If you have a fireplace in your home that you do not use at all, you should still have it cleaned and close the flue. This is what you can do when you put in a new central heating and air unit in a older home, but the fireplace will still be there when and if you want to use it. Many homes that have a central unit still like to use there fireplace from time to time. It can be used on a cool night and you can leave the gas or electric heating turned off.
