Children's Playground Games

By:

There are a huge variety of playground games available for children, but not all require any more equipment than simply the children themselves. Here are a just few examples you may like to try out with your children and their friends.

Octopus Tag

The children all stand in a line at one end of the playground (open space is best.) One child is chosen to be 'It' - this child goes to stand in the middle of the play space. When It says, 'Go!' all the rest of the children run to the other end of the space while it tries to tag them. Any child tagged by It has to stay in the middle and help It. The rest of the children run from one end of the playground to the other trying to evade all the Its. They run backwards and forwards until just one child is left - this child is the next It.

Red Light/Green Light Statues

Almost the opposite of Tag, in this game one child is a stationary 'stoplight' and the rest of the children try to touch him or her. The children all form a line at least 10 metres across the playground from the stoplight. The stoplight turns around so that his or her back is to the other players. The stoplight starts the game by yelling, 'green light!' On a green light, all the other children are able to either hop, jump, forward roll or even three legged run towards the stoplight (whichever seems most appropriate and fun considering the age of the players and the type of flooring they are playing on.) At any point, the stop light may yell "red light!" and turn around. If the stoplight catches any of the other kids still moving, then those kids are out. Play continues when the stoplight turns back around and yells "green light". The first child to touch the stop light wins the game. If the stoplight catches all the children out before one is able to touch him or her, then the stoplight wins.

Bubble gum

Less boisterous than the first two games, Bubblegum is preferred by girls. They all stand facing each other in a tight circle and with both fists out in front of them. The child chosen to be Bubblegum uses one of her fists to tap everybody's fists (including the other one of her own) going around the circle chanting, 'Bubblegum, bubblegum, in a dish, how many pieces do you wish?' Whoever she taps on, 'wish,' says a number between 1 and 20 and Bubblegum will tap that number out around the circle. The fist she lands on has to be put behind the owner's back. Then Bubblegum chants the rhyme again and again until only one fist is left in the circle. The owner of this fist wins the game.

Human Knot

The children all stand in a circle in the playground and reach out across the circle in any direction to hold hands with two other children. They then have to work together, climbing through arms, under legs or over each other as required without letting go to untangle the knot!

Do you remember any of these playground games from your own childhood? Were they known by the same names? What other games do you remember that your children might enjoy?
