Children With Special Needs Do Excel

By:

What exactly are special needs? Well, they cover a very broad list of health issues that include both mental and physical health and can be as minor as a slight bit of developmental delay in a given area or a slight problem with the muscles in a specific region of the body to someone who is a quadriplegic or someone with Down's Syndrome or Autism.

It professional tests reveal that a child meets the requirements to be deemed abnormal, which is the opposite of normal by accepted standards, that child is considered to require special needs. These needs could be as simple as an adapted learning environment or a set of special tools to help them with the required schoolwork. Other children might require a totally separate environment to function every day.

These adaptations can significantly improve their ability to perform in school when they are encouraged to do so. Students that are pushed by their parents and educators from early on tend to experience a much higher quality of life than those who are coddled and spoiled during the initial phases of their life.

Many people feel sorry for those who have handicaps or who are different in some way than those who are considered to be normal and unfortunately this is a misconception that most times winds up holding the individual back from all that they can achieve. Everyone has an unlimited amount of potential but we all don't express it in the same way. It is important to make sure that no matter what you do that you allow all people to tap into their own potential.

There is no denying that special needs individuals are different than what is considered normal, but is this really an excuse to continue the babying routine. They will surprise even the most relentless skeptics if given the right adaptations and encouragement. They can soar to the levels of unexplored potentials that have been waiting for the chance to spread their wings and fly. It wouldn't be smart to think every special needs person will excel at everything. However, they will excel at something beyond every ones expectations is given the opportunity.

As difficult and daunting as it can be at times, it can be easier to focus on their handicap rather than nurture and foster their growth, allowing them to be all that they can be. There is so much more untapped potential resting on the inside and waiting for an avenue to express the real possibilities. Even those with handicaps and developmental delays have important contributions to make the world in which we share a better place for everyone. Treating them like babies is actually insulting and degrading. They are adults with physical limits only and unlimited untapped resources burning inside. Stephen Hawking is a great example.
