Children And Permanent Weight Loss

By:

The benefits of quality time spent with our children are numerous and far reaching. This cannot be emphasized enough. When it comes to the health and well being of our offspring, it is important that we teach them healthy food and exercise habits. If they are carrying too many extra pounds we need to ensure that they get on the road to lasting weight loss success before they reach adulthood when it becomes much more difficult.

It is important to note, however, that just like anything else to do with raising children, teaching our kids about permanent weight loss can be harder than we might expect. This could have something to do with the fact that exchanging the regular potato chips with something healthy such as carrot sticks will not meet with their approval. It is highly likely that our children may not happily accept such sudden changes. We must be more subtle and find ways of making healthy food look attractive.

There are other unforeseen problems that may arise. For instance we may encounter fights among siblings, and sudden mood swings that could affect children suddenly deprived of their usual sugar and carbohydrate fixes. We may also want to prepare ourselves with the possibility that we might end up preparing loads of healthy snacks which could remain uneaten. However, we need to persevere as safe and healthy weight loss is vital for their ongoing wellbeing.

Selling the idea of losing weight to our children can be a much harder sell than pitching it to more mature people like friends or older family members. They somehow need to be made aware of the importance of lasting weight loss, and trust that we have their best interests in mind. This challenge may be tackled in any one of many creative ways.

We can begin by explaining to our kids in a clear manner why we feel they need to lose some weight. They should understand that it is for their own benefit and not just another case of us imposing our parental rules on them. We need to bear in mind that by their very nature children often appear to behave selfishly. They are also inclined to take things very literally, which can affect the manner in which we need to put things to them. Talking about the future may have little impact, but referring to the present and drawing their attention to the advantages that they will experience as they are losing the weight is a far better tactic to employ.

One idea we can use is to sit down as a family and set out some nutritional boundaries. This could encompass the need to not purchase certain types of unhealthy snacks, instead opting for snacks that are healthy and hence more likely to contribute to permanent weight loss. But remember that our kids may be social creatures and might find plenty of opportunities in the homes of their friends to wrap their teeth around a sugary delight. Try to teach them to resist temptation.

Ask your children to help in the kitchen with the preparation of healthy meals and snacks. Involving them this way makes food seem like fun. They will be happy to eat what they have prepared themselves. Just make sure the ingredients are healthy ones.

One thing we definitely do not want to do is embarrass them in front of their friends, but it is a wise decision to encourage our kids to say no to unhealthy snacks and temptations. As a result the child will feel good about being in control of the situation.

Allowing them to voice their commitment to their healthy new diet is an important step in the process, helping them to no longer see losing weight as something that we have forced upon them. Help them to feel that the decision is theirs and they will be on the way to lasting weight loss success.
