Child Obesity Nuked With These Four Straight-up Parenting Tips

By:

It hurts a parent in a lot of ways when we see our child has gotten far enough out of shape to be considered obese. Not only does it make us worry about their safety, but we know that obese people in modern society face a good deal of ridicule and we cannot shake the feeling that it is our own fault their health is getting out of control. While we do play a role, it is also our very way of life that we are up against here, and getting it all right can be a challenge.

But you can turn it all around if you are willing to face that challenge. Here are some tips for getting going.

1. Forget the Goal

First off, forget about the goal—and especially forget about stressing the goal to your child. You can monitor the results if you want, but don't make it a big deal or even let your child know you are keeping track. It is not healthy to push your child too hard to reach an optimum level of fitness at a young age and drawing too much attention to the issue can set the roots for an inferiority complex that exacerbates the issue.

2. Focus on the Lifestyle

The best thing to do is get it in your head that you are not trying to "train" your child into top shape but rather you are trying to slowly give them the skills for a healthy life by starting them off young. Teach them about eating healthy and how to find healthy foods that are enjoyable. Enforce a bit of reasonable portion control as they grow older, teach them the why.

Also, look at your own habits and how you can create a healthier lifestyle for the whole family—when you do that, it becomes impossible for your child to do their own thing because you design their life, not them. Not to mention that then health becomes a family thing rather than just something they are subjected to.

3. Get it While they're Young

You might be skeptical about concerns over a child's weight to begin with—after all, shouldn't we just let kids be kids? Well, yes and no. It is important to not get too serious about these things, and that's why it's your responsibility to design that healthy lifestyle and put things more in their control when they get older.

But it is important to address weight problems and healthy living in general at a young age because as people get older, it becomes much less of a chance it will become a lifelong habit.

4. Keep it Simple

The most important thing is that redesigning a child's health should be as simple as possible. No need for crazy cutting-edge training programs and diet plans. Just give them reasonable portions of nutritious food, limit overconsumption, and get them involved in active play. As they get older, direct their energy towards sports and outdoor activities.

Simple as that, and anything more is overkill unless your child is extremely obese and you are doing things under the instruction of a qualified health professional.
