Chikmagalur is a historically and culturally significant town situated in the southwest of Karnataka state. The town nestles amongst the Baba Budan Giri Hills, at a height of 1037 metres above sea level. Although it is a rather solitary tranquil destination, it boasts numerous sites of interest including majestic waterfalls, lofty mountains, sites of religious interest and charming hill stations. Chikmagalur is also well known for its tea and coffee estates. Although the areas climate is appealing the year round, the period from October through March following the monsoon is considered to be the ideal time to visit.
The hill station called Kudremukh is renowned as a great excursion destination. Its name translates as Face of a Horse, as the mountain peak resembles the head of a horse. Located at a lofty altitude of 1894 metres, the environs of the station contain many kinds of fauna and flora. Interestingly much of the region is as yet not fully explored, and contains numerous exciting trek paths and mysterious caves. The area also provides a sensational vista of the rising sun seemingly appearing from behind the verdant green slopes.
The mesmerising Kemmanagundi is renowned for its numerous attractions and delightful climate which remains pleasant throughout the whole of the year. Notable attractions in the vicinity include Kallathi Falls, Hebbe Falls, Raj Bhavan and the Rose Garden. Trekking is the best way to explore the area as there are numerous undisturbed sites to be visited.
No visit to Chikmagalur is complete without a visit to the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. Here you will see exotic fauna such as the leopard, tiger, elephant, giant squirrel, gaur and sloth bear. The sanctuary is also a delight for the birdwatcher with avian varieties such as the king vulture, black napped flycatcher, billed stork and great horned owl to be seen.
Meanwhile the lover of culture and history will be entranced by the town of Sringeri. Here you will find the Sri Vidyashankara Temple and the Sharadamba Temple, the latter being dedicated to Goddess Saraswati.
