Singapore, a vibrant city-state located off the southern border of the Malay peninsula is now among the most prosperous nations in the world. Inheriting a colourful history Singapore has been a port of note for many decades. The city was founded by the British East India Company under the leadership of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 as a trading post on the spice route. In the course of time Singapore developed to become one of the most vital military and commercial hubs of the British empire. In the years following its independence Singapore has thrived, with a flourishing market economy. It is also a major tourist destination.

The historical building complex known as CHIJMES is one of Singapores major attractions. CHIJMES was originally constructed as a Catholic convent comprising of a chapel in the Gothic manner now a multi-function hall called CHIJMES hall and Caldwell House, presently an art gallery.

The CHIJMES chapel was originally conceived of by a group of French nuns, who sailed to Singapore with the intention of establishing a convent, and took up residence at the already existent Caldwell House. Within days the nuns commenced their mission by taking in pupils. The chapel was constructed later under the guidance of Father Charles Benedict Nain, who functioned as lead architect. He was the creator of the many ornate features of the chapel.

A major part of the history of the everyday activities of the convent comes from the detailed diaries maintained by convent scribes. These documents reveal that vigorous activity was part of the convent life, with the nuns organizing mass, maintaining the buildings, grading papers and raising funds for their activities.

Presently the deconsecrated chapel and convent no longer engage in religious activity. Meticulous restoration work has retained the character and structure of the chapel and the convent. However it is now a themed plaza of stores and food outlets which operate amongst the courtyards, secluded walls and long sheltered walkways. The sites historical splendour and modern amenities attract many visitors.

When looking for a five star hotel in Singapore, there is no better choice than the Raffles Hotel Singapore. When selecting one of the Singapore hotel packages, the selection offered by the Raffles Singapore is hard to beat, with lavish comforts, fine wining and dining, modern amenities and courteous attentive service.
