Chihuahua Stuffed Toy & Facts

By:

Chihuahua stuffed toys are as popular as many of the toy breeds are. Toy breeds, like Chihuahua's, are the perfect lap dog because they literally really do fit in your lap. A Chihuahua stuffed toy can be as big or as small as you like, although the larger it is, the more there is to snuggle.

Although small in size, Chihuahua's have a fierce reputation for having bigger-than-life attitudes and sometimes carry themselves as though they were as large as a 260 pound St. Bernard. They are really master of their universe and generally are not afraid of anything that crosses their path, no matter how big it is. It's for this reason that a Chihuahua can make a terrific pet for some but can also be a nightmare for others. Sometimes opting for a Chihuahua stuffed toy instead of the real thing, is a wise decision.

The Chihuahua gets its name from a Mexican state that sits between Texas and New Mexico. It is likely that the breed originated from the cross-breeding of ancient Techichi dogs (from the Toltecs) and dogs from Asia that were hairless. The Techichi has been described by Historians as a heavy-boned small dog that had a long coat and were native to Central America. They were connected to the Toltec civilization which was near what we now know as Mexico City. The breed was actually bigger than the Chihuahua we know today and could not hear.

When the Aztecs conquered the Toltecs, they adopted little dogs which became sacred symbols of the upper class. Breed historian, K. Deblinde, believes that somewhere along the way, the Techichi breed was crossed with an Asian hairless breed and then made its way to the new world via the Behring Straight. And, the much smaller, vocal, and smooth-coated Chihuahua was born. In the 1850s, the Chihuahua breed was discovered in the Mexican state of the same name and was first registered with the American Kennel Club in 1904.

Of all the AKC (American Kennel Club) registered breeds, the Chihuahua is the smallest weighing in at no more than six pounds (and sometimes as little as two) and standing just six to eight inches tall. They are quite muscular in appearance and have a very distinctive head. While most Chihuahua's have smooth coats, there are those that are long-coated which appear almost curly at times.

Online stores have superb Chihuahua stuffed toys that amazingly looks like the real thing. While one plush pup stands 15 inches tall, it in no way takes away from the breed. And besides, with a slightly larger Chihuahua stuffed toy, it will be able to withstand rough and tumble treatment at the hands of the young ones that are sure to claim it for themselves.
