The state of Illinois allows a private individual to sell a maximum of five vehicles in one calendar year without obtaining a dealers license. In other words, you can sell your car, your brothers car, your cousins car, and two more cars in one calendar year without a dealers license. However, you will need a license to sell a sixth car.

How do I become a licensed dealer?

Once you have your site, complete an Application for Dealer license in the state of Illinois. You will also need to hire an approved agency to complete a criminal background check, complete with fingerprinting, complete the requirements for collecting sales tax through the Illinois Department of Revenue, and obtain license plates.
