Chemical Skin Peeling - In Clinic Or At Home?

Chemical Skin Peeling - In Clinic Or At Home?

The science behind chemical skin peeling is not a new one! In Roman and Egyptian times, the process was popular amongst those who could afford to concern themselves with such things as flawless, young-looking skin.

Back then, the process would be performed by bathing in naturally occurring acids, such as sour milk and grape skins. Cleopatra was, of cause, known to bathe in ass's milk, for her complexion.

The method have moved on a long way since then, but the principles behind chemical skin peeling remain the same.

Nowadays, we can use many different forms of acids to do the same job of peeling the skin, to various degrees. The modern chemical skin peel operates by giving the skin a controlled acid burn. The depth to which the skin is peeled depends on the strength of the chemical.

There are several chemical peels that are most popular, and it's important to understand the differences between them, to get the results you want, and for the skin peeling process to be as safe for you as you would hope.

AHA or Alpha Hydroxy acid are the mildest and also the safest. These are are quite commonly performed at home using chemical peel kits. They can be repeated often, and many people choose to repeat the AHA peeling process every week.

Because the AHA chemicals are very mild, they only remove the very top layer of the skin, and therefore can only be expected to peel the most superficial acne and blemishes of the skin.

The next strongest of the chemical peels is TCA or Trichloroacetic acid. As you would expect, this can peel the facial skin to a deeper level, removing the lighter wrinkles, and more blemishes than you can from AHA chemical peels. TCA peels remove the epidermal and upper dermal layers of the skin, for a far deeper peel.

You will find that after this treatment, your face will be quite red, and it is normal for people to use a medical grade concealer after a TCA chemical peel. The healing process will take seven to ten days, during which time it is recommended to stay out of the sun, as the newly exposed layer of skin will be very sensitive!

Again, the TCA chemical peels are available for home use, but due to the increased strength of them, it is essential that you read all of the instructions for use.

The strongest chemical peel generally performed is the Phenol chemical peel. This is an extremely deep skin peeling process, and is not generally available for home use. Even if you managed to get hold of a phenol peel kit, you would be well advised not to perform this treatment on your self, as this should only be done by a trained dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. Phenol chemical peeling can remove even deeper wrinkles from your facial skin, along with blemishes and sun-damaged skin.

Before you see the actual results of your Phenol peel, you will have an extremely red, sore face for around a week, which will fade in time. Your skin will have to be protected with bandages or petroleum jelly, until the healing process is well under-way, and of cause sun-light should be actively avoided!

Chemical peels can be rather expensive, and so people who want to save a few dollars on treatment, but are concerned about using a home skin peeling kit, often choose to get the treatment abroad. If you choose to go down this route, my advice is to go somewhere that is not so hot, such as Eastern Europe. I can't think of anything worse than travelling to a far-off, exotic country, and have to stay out of the sun!
