Chelsea Fc - The Wonga And Wags

By:

High-profile football club Chelsea (also known as the Blue) have been English champions three times, won the FA Cup five times, the League Cup four times and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup twice. Yet many have claimed their success is largely down to money.

The past decade has been the most successful in the clubs history, with high attendance rates and sales of football tickets, winning consecutive Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 and reaching their first UEFA Champions League final in 2008. Their tremendous run of success coincided with their financial boom, which kick-started in 2003 when the club was bought by Russian oil magnate, Roman Abramovich.

The Russian billionaire was far the richest person ever to acquire a British football club, and he quickly wiped out the club's substantial debt before proceeding to fund spending on new players on an unprecedented scale. Chelsea FC became the richest club in England, with substantial investments leading to a golden era of excellent facilities, top players and first class football.

Although Chelsea is no longer the richest club in England, their ownership by Abramovich has undoubtedly helped to change the face of football. Their costly transfers and extravagant wages led to controversy over whether money can buy titles and trophies. Other top-spending football clubs include Manchester City and Liverpool.

Chelsea have had the funds to attract some of the worlds finest players, including Michael Essien, Ashley Cole, Petr Cech, John Terry, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Ricardo Carvalho. In their wake, they have also had their own trail of prominent WAGs, including Carly Zucker, girlfriend of Joe Cole, and singer and presenter Cheryl Cole (wife of Ashley), who won the title of "Sexiest Footballer's wife" in FHM's 2006 Bloke Awards.

The London club glows with the luster of its strong Italian connections, through many players and managers. Current successful Italian player and coach, Carlo Ancelotti, came from AC Milan to manage Chelsea in 2009. Carlo is the third Chelsea manager hailing from Italy, after Gianluca Vialli and Claudio Ranieri. It remains to be seen whether he will take the club on to further triumphs and prove that they are truly a team of substance-over-style.
