Checking The Vehicle Emissions

By:

Every vehicle will put out some type of emissions. Whether it is directly from the engine or comes from the exhaust system, there will be some residue from the running engine to deal with. Is that good or bad? It usually depends. Most vehicles manufactured these days are meant to run a clean engine, at least when they are in peak operating condition. Older cars or ones that are not in good maintenance might not have a great emissions history with the exhaust system. You can find this out by taking it in for a test to a professional. They will simply look at your exhaust pipe as it warms up in the driveway.

What Are Emissions?

Emissions are toxins and pollutants released by your car's engine. Certain states have heavy restrictions on how many emissions your car can release without getting a ticket. In these states, the cars need to be inspected annually. They receive a sticker that shows that they went through a testing process. When you are not inspected and happen to get pulled over by a police officer for a traffic violation, then they can also write a ticket for not having an emissions sticker on your vehicle. It could be double the price for you in just a matter of minutes.

To get your car tested for its emissions, you simply make an appointment with a garage that is certified to do the testing. These repair shops or auto repair places will hook up special machinery to the exhaust system of your car. It will turn on, and then monitor the air output from the exhaust. The machine will run for a few minutes, and then will be turned off. A computer will print out the emissions test.

California, for instance, has very high standards with cars and does not allow a high number of PPMs, or parts per million, to be released in the atmosphere. New Jersey is also a state that tests for emissions in order for cars to be allowed on the road. So, what happens when a car does not pass the emissions test?

The owner of the car either takes it to get repaired immediately, or they risk getting pulled over and having a ticket written for not having the sticker. The expense of getting a ticket might force people to consider having the repairs done on their car right away rather than waiting. Some work might be simple and include an oxygen sensor, while other repairs could be more involved and expensive. Why Do Emissions Matter?

Emissions matter because it is air that everyone breathes. For states like New Jersey and California that are highly populated with a lot of congestion, it could mean that many toxins go into the air by people who commute on the highways. When states restrict what can go into the air, it saves the environment from being damaged. The air is cleaner simply by forcing people to keep their cars in good shape, so they aren't heavy on emission releases.
