Check Your Honey

Check Your Honey

By:

Americans have a love affair with Honey. It is sweet and pure so we use it for diet aids and put it on kitchen utensils and drizzle it for natural ways to sweeten our cereal, coffee or tea.

We love it on biscuits and breads and we even put it on our chicken. When some of us were little kids our mothers or grandmothers would give us a spoon full of it after taking nasty medicine like caster oil. Yuck!

I know that trade is how commercialism works and that we are doing more of it with second and third world countries.

We have people in America who raise Bees and collect honey as a hobby. Many of us have purchased it on the side of the road from a hobbyist or at a farmers fruit or vegetable stand.

Hobbyist and beekeepers provide 40% our nations honey crop along with about 1600 commercial operations. The other 60 % of the market is provided by international trade.

Real honey is just that, pure honey with out any additives. You can eat it right off the honeycomb and it should taste the same as in the jar. Of course the difference in color and taste depends on the types of plants or trees that the bees were consuming.

All in all if youve had real light or dark honey you know how it should taste. So 60% of our honey market is being provided by Vietnam, Australia, Spain and Wait for it China.

Yes folks, China. We all know how in the past years our childrens toys, baby formula, vegetables and other food stuff has been contaminated from China.

Im not saying that the honey is contaminated only that China does not produce food stuff to meet our standards. In fact the government recently seized imported honey from China that contained Antibiotics. We dont allow antibiotics in our food in this country!

They also make fake honey using food coloring and corn syrup. China has been accused of dumping honey below production cost into the American markets. Custom agents think that much of the honey coming from Vietnam is from China. We have put stiff tariffs on China and they are trying to get in under the radar by sending it through Vietnam and other far eastern countries.

Florida, California, North Carolina and Wisconsin in order to safeguard the purity of honey has established criteria mandating that honey should be 100% pure honey.

If you live around some of those white stacked beehives, at least you know that somebody in your state is making honey the old fashion way.

So when you go to purchase some honey, dont depend on the look or design of the bottle or container. The Chinese are already using that trick. You know they are great copiers of things that are already made. Use your favorite kitchen utensil and taste it.

You need to READ the LABEL to make sure it says 100% pure honey. If you find some real cheep, it is probably fake.

We know that our Bee population is declining in America. Real honey has been rising in price due to hives being killed off by colony collapse disorder.

Its probably best to get some from the farmers market or the roadside beekeeper. For those living in large cities like LA or New York, check your labels.
