Cheapest Hosting: How Companies Afford To Make Their Cheapest Hosting 'free'

By:

There are hundreds of free hosting sites where you won't have to pay any money to have your website hosted. The thing is they either cost you in web hosting restrictions, time, or by having your free web pages modified by adding popups, or other such advertisements. Some of these web hosts claim to offer free hosting but the catch would be that you will have to pay a hefty amount for a domain name or other services.

How do the "free" web hosts make money?

Free web site hosts make money via the amount of advertising they put on your webpages. They will fill your pages with banner ads, popups and popunders. Certain free web hosting companies do not put ads on your site but will require you or the webmaster to click on banners in their control panel. Some will just display banners in the file manager hoping you will click on them. Still some webhosting companies will lure customers with free hosting packages in the hope that those who sign-up will upgrade to their paid packages. A few may end up selling your email address.

The newest popular way for the companies offering free web hosting will require their customers to make "quality forum postings" as a means of getting themselves some free content which enable them to display more advertisements to their own website.

How reliable are "free" web hosts?

They are not. There are some exceptions, of course. Should the free web host company is making considerable money from their popups, banner ads or popdowns, then that web host will stay in business. This is provided no one abuses their hosting service with hacking problems, spam, etc. If the company simply accepts everyone that signs-up and has an instant activation that is automated along with offering such features as CGI or PHP, someone will find a way to take advantage of it and abuse it.

"Free" webspace is ideal for what exactly?

Businesses should not use free web hosting services. Those who would be best served by free web hosting companies would be those who are hoping to learn website hosting basics, have a simple personal website or someone who wants to try scripts that they may have developed on different web hosting environments as a kind of study.

Do "free" webhosts have limitations?

Yes, they do. Should you be hoping to build a website that contains icons, great amounts of text and pictures, you would do well to go for the web hosting companies that allow that. Most free website hosting providers will definitely place limitations on what you can or can't do with your website. Some of these free webhosts will not allow the use of pictures or will have a 5-page limit for websites that they will host for free. These limitations may not allow you to build the type of website that you envision and you may end up looking for a different web host company later on, as well as, having to rebuild your site.
