Cheap Auto Insurance For Teens

If you think that the words "cheap auto insurance for teens" form an oxymoron, read on, and you may find that it is not only possible to find relatively cheap insurance, but that you can use insurance to teach a teen responsibility.

While it is likely that you will pay more for insurance for anyone under age twenty-three than for more experienced drivers, there are some things that you can do that will help to ensure that you get the very best rates for teen insurance.

Before you allow your teen to get a driver's license, insist that he or she take a driver's ed class. Many insurance companies offer teens that have had the course a discount on their insurance costs.

Institute a no pass no play rule for driving. Students that have a "B" average on their grades in school get a lower rate for auto insurance. If a student fails to maintain this average (especially when you know that it is possible for them) take away their keys until the student brings the grade point average high enough to qualify for the discount once again. After all, if grades are dropping because the student has driving privileges, then the student is no longer focused on the main job.

Institute a no tolerance for DUI policy in your home. Underage drinking is illegal. Underage drinking and driving can result in loss of property and life. As a parent, you must set the example of no tolerance for DUI by your own actions.

In addition, create an atmosphere in your home whereby a teen that has been drinking or using illegal drugs can always call for a ride home. As a parent, you may be furious as to how your child got into the condition, but be grateful that the teen took the responsibility to call you for a safe ride home.

If you pay for your teen's insurance, then make the teen pay the difference caused by any tickets or accidents that he or she has. This is a great way to teach a teen that there are consequences to our actions. If your state allows teens to take a defensive driving course rather than have a ticket go onto their record, insist that they take the course. Giving up a Saturday as a consequence of a poor choice that gets the teen a ticket is a great way to teach responsibility and will save the teen the cost of an insurance increase.
