Charges For Incorrect Shipping Addresses

Charges For Incorrect Shipping Addresses

By:

When you ship something all the way across the country, one of the worst things that can happen is that the address was wrong on the shipping form. This might be a worst case scenario, but the fact of the matter is that the most common problem that arises during a delivery is that the shipper put the wrong address down for the courier company. This creates a problem for everyone.

You will look bad as your delivery won't reach your customer, your customer will be frustrated because they won't have their package, and the courier will have wasted time and money going to a wrong destination. Think of LTL carriers that plan their entire route around everyone who has rented space in their truck, only to find out the complete route was unnecessary because of a wrong address. That is why there may be charges for labeling a package incorrectly, but even more so, why it is so important to ensure that you have put the correct address on everything that you are shipping.

The good news is that there are more and more tools available to you to make sure that you have the correct address on everything that you ship. Using the tools that are available to you in your courier account from your delivery company is a great way to minimize shipping errors. For instance, some companies have now integrated online address verification into their shipping software.

This is a feature that checks to see if you have put down a valid US address, because typically if you've made a mistake or a typo the address and zip code won't line up. This can catch a lot of mistakes before shipping begins. Also, using a feature, like an online address book, in your courier account can help you store the correct addresses of your clients and customers so that you can just click and place an order to be shipped to them. That way, you know you have the stored address correct and don't have to worry about a typo costing you money every time that you go to type up a new shipping label.

If you do have an incorrect package on a shipment there will be a fee or surcharge levied on your account, as well as you will have to pay to ship it again as the package will likely be returned to you.
