A dive watch is a spectacular piece of crown jewel for the diver. Modern age dive watches are much more advanced and has more water resistance than the usual 200 to 300 meters. If a watch has to be certified as a true diver's watch, it has to pass through a series of tests. A dive watch has to first of all be in accordance with the highest test standards which is ISO-6425. A dive watch should have readability - Visibility at 9.84 inches / 25 centimeters in total darkness. The running second hand is given a luminous tail which gives an indication that the watch is still running in total darkness.

A dive watch should be resistance to magnetic waves. Even after an exposure to a strong magnetic field of 4,800 Amps per minute, the watch should not skip more than + / - 30 seconds in a day. A dive watch should also be shock resistant. Normally, a 3 KG plastic hammer delivers an impact velocity to check the shock resistance. Even after an exposure to a shock, a typical dive watch should not skip more than + / - 60 seconds in a day. A Dive watch should even be chemical resistant. Test water is prepared which will have more salinity than the normal sea water. This type of watch should also have a solid Strap or a band. This is usually tested by applying a force of 45 LBF or 200 N in opposite directions to each spring bar. Last but not the least, all battery powered dive watches should have an End Of Life (EOL) Indicator.


It should also be given simple maintenance by the owner himself which is also very important. It is highly recommended to rinse the dive watch in fresh water, every time after venturing out of the sea. Some manufacturers even advise to leave the dive watch in freshwater overnight. It is highly well-proof method to avoid corrosion. By doing this, the life time of the buttons, crown and pressure sensors are safeguarded. Whenever a diver is preparing for a venture into the sea, it is highly advised to inspect the dive watch completely starting from the wrist band for any defects especially if the watch is exposed to any strong chemicals and gasoline.
