Changing Your Habits Can Cut Down Your Gas Costs

By:

It's not easy to change habits. We get used to doing things a certain way and we're not interested in changing no matter what. But with gasoline exceeding four dollars a gallon we're rethinking our old driving habits to see if we can cut down on fuel consumption.

There are many ways you ca save on fuel. A mile saved here and there can quickly add up to substantial savings over time. Since oil is not renewable, cutting down on fuel consumption allows us to also cut down on our dependency on foreign oil. Over 50% of our gas comes from foreign lands!

We can easily cut down on many of our old habits by driving sensibly. Avoid aggressive driving. In other words steer clear of rapid acceleration and quick braking. Just by avoiding aggressive driving we can save up 33% of fuel.

Surely, you don't speed. Do you? Speeding doesn't get anyone anywhere any faster, but it does cause a greater consumption of gas. Gas usage goes up considerably at speeds over 60 mph. On average, you spend an extra 30 cents a gallon for each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph.

When you're on the highway, use cruise control, which helps maintain a constant speed. High gears and overdrive gears are preferable for lower consumption. A fast turning engine consumes more gas. it is helpful to keep an eye on your tachometer. And, if your engine turns more slowly, you also save on friction and engine wear.

Avoid excessive idling. How would you like to do 0 miles with one gallon? Idling will do that for you. You cannot get a worse performance. If you estimate that you will be in line at a fast food restaurant or at the bank, or you're waiting for a passing train, for longer than 30 seconds, it is best to turn off your engine. Idling is more expensive for larger vehicles. It is cheaper to restart your car rather than idle.

Think of turning off your air conditioning. It may get hot but try opening a window and breathe in the fresh air. Your mileage can be lowered by two or three miles per gallon if you use air conditioning.

Is this trip necessary? You can try to combine all your appointments and errands in one day to avoid extra driving. Rush hour traffic should be avoided as much as possible. If possible, and the distance is short, try walking or riding a bicycle.

Don't drive unless you know exactly where you are going. Don't drive around looking for something. Unfortunately, dragging Main Street is a thing of the past. We have evolved into car-pooling and sharing driving and gas expenses with friends. Public transportation is also a good option. Changing driving habits will not cost you anything, but the result will likely bring a smile to your face and cash in your pocket.
