Changing Careers: An Exciting New Direction

Many of us change careers several times over the course of our working lives. Sometimes it is our decision to alter our route: you may be burned out after performing the same tasks over long periods of time, or you may have found something that really interests you and gets your creative juices going.

The decision to alter career paths may have been made for us by the economic squeeze which has caused massive unemployment. Whatever your reason, here are some words of advice to help you begin going in a new direction.

-- If your decision to change careers is your own, get to the bottom of precisely what you are unhappy about. You may like the field you are in, but don't like your work environment. Perhaps all you need is a change of venue, and not a change of career. Do you have a lot of education invested in your present career that you will still like to make use of? After a soul search, you may find that you really don't want to make any drastic changes after all: just some gentle tweaking will do.

-- Take some time to figure out what you are really excited about in life. Do you have a passion and talent for talking with teenagers? Do you really like teaching that Sunday school class? Are you a computer "genius" who can figure out anything to do with technology? You may wish to take a career assessment test to see where your interests can take you now.

-- Once you have some idea which way you'd like to go, spend time researching potential careers. If you are making a 180 degree turn, you may very well need to go back to school to get the proper education in your newly chosen field. Be honest with yourself: do you have it in you to get back into a school routine and all of the demands that would entail? Do you have the financial backup necessary to get by until you are finished with your education?

-- Get back up to speed on your job interviewing skills and all of the other housekeeping tasks associated with seeking for work. How's your resume? If you haven't done one in a long time, or if you need advice on how to rework its wording to suit your new career choice, it would be wise to get professional advice.

Changing careers can be exciting, and the results extremely rewarding. Good luck!
