Chalets Anse Forbans Assisting The Conservation Of The Seychelles

By:

On the 24th September 2010 a young hawksbill turtle landed onto the beach of Anse Forbans located on the mainland of Mahe Seychelles where she laid her eggs in an unsafe location. Chalets d Anse Forbans made contact with the MCSS who advised that the nest be re-located to a safer location in order to ensure the survival of the hawksbill turtles. A new location for the nest was identified and the turtle eggs were relocated under the supervision of the MCSS. A hatching date between the 19th and the 24th November 2010 was approximated.

On the 22nd November 2010 the hawksbill nest showed signs of subsidence which indicated that the hatchlings where digging their way to the surface. Shortly after this the hatchlings started to emerge from the nest and the beach area was cleared to ensure that there were no obstructions to prevent the hatchlings from making their way to the Indian ocean.

Of the 187 eggs that were relocated, there were 185 hatchlings that made it safely to the Indian Ocean. This represents a 98.9% survival rate which may not have been achieved if the nest was left in its original location.

Mrs Brigitte Haworth Manager at Chalets d Anse Forbans commented No matter how many times you see hatchlings, the total delight in seeing the hatchlings reaching the ocean is an experience never to be forgotten. Mrs Haworth went on to conclude that the work carried out by the Chalets in association with the MCSS regarding the conservation of the Hawksbill Turtles was making a remarkable difference for the survival of this species. This apparent small difference does have a significant impact on the overall conservation of marine life in the Seychelles.

Chalets d Anse Forbans is built on a former coconut plantation and was opened in October 1994. The Seychelles self catering establishment of Chalets d Anse Forbans consists of 12 beach chalets and 2 family chalets. All chalets are enjoy sea facing views and are merely steps away from the secluded beach of Anse Forbans.
