Light bulbs have come a long way since their invention and they are available in a range of shapes and sizes, and provide an invaluable service. One of the major problems in recent years has been the overuse of energy. CFL lights help to curb this by saving energy. These are just one of the types of light bulbs you get and here is a look at how they compare to LED and incandescents.

CFL

Compact fluorescent, or CFL, are becoming popular because of their ability to use less energy and last longer than traditional light bulbs. A good CFL light can be up to four times more efficient when compared to the incandescents. With something this efficient you would expect it to last a much shorter time than ordinary lights, but the truth is these are designed in such a way that they can last you anything up to ten times longer.

LED

Light emitting diode, or LED light bulbs are another type that helps you save energy. Unlike CFL that works by using a glass tube, these bulbs use a semi-conductor. One of the halves is the "impure" side called the p-side, and the other is the n-side. The current then goes from one side to the other, the end result of which leads to a photon of light. This can be done in a range of colors by changing the color of the materials that constitute the p-n junction. In the CFL light bulbs there are filaments that can burn out but with the LED there is none.

Incandescent

These bulbs are the ones that were originally invented. They work by having an electric current pass through a filament, which causes it to glow. These lights are good for living rooms but don't do a very good job when you need a lot of light, like in the kitchen and study. These are not as bright as the CFL and LED varieties. Further than this they use far more energy and tend to burn out rather quickly.

Each one of these three lights comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. If you are looking to save cash and energy then CFL light bulbs is definitely the way to go. For a run of the mill to provide light occasionally the incandescent would be an OK but not great choice.
