The study of ethics is an extremely complex one and many books have been written about what ethics really is and what determines ethical behavior. While philosophers debate the many fine points of ethical theory the practical implications of ethical behavior in our lives is too important to ignore. The fact is that our behavior does make a huge difference in how we treat others and ultimately in how we our treated.
Because of this most profession companies and business organizations encourage the adoption of a code of ethics that promotes right behavior. The results are indisputably positive. Ethical codes can enhance our business and personal relationships and make us more honorable and productive citizens. Responsible, respectful, fair and honest behavior can enhance both our professional and personal lives. Ethical codes can also have many practical benefits. They can make companies more competitive and greatly reduce their risks of doing business. Most importantly ethical codes can help people be more accountable in making the right decisions in circumstances when the right course of action is not always assured.
In the following eight module course we will be learning more about the value of an ethical code. We will look carefully at what ethical behavior is and how we can benefit from it. We will examine what a business code of ethics is and how one is constructed. We will examine the important elements of an ethical code and why these elements are important. We will also look at what happens when the important aspects of ethical behavior are missing. Finally we will look at how ethical codes help us to deal with the extremely difficult decisions we make in our everyday lives, and the dilemmas that make life both interesting and challenging.
