Ceramic Products Filling Our World

Ceramics. Say the word, and what do you think of? Fancy plates and cups? Well, that's one aspect of it, I suppose - but only one. Ceramic products are all around us today. I would like to mention a few ways in which they are.

First stop: The garage. You see your vehicle parked over there? Well, chances are that every time you hit the brakes, you are depending on ceramics to help you. Many cars today have ceramic brake pads installed - they help you to stop more reliably in all sorts of braking situations - and that helps keep you safe.

Now that we've been to the garage, let's leave there and go into the house. Let's go up to the bathroom. There we will find ceramic tile on the floor, and in the shower stall. You might just even find some on a kitchen countertop or on the floor in a hallway. Both beautiful and functional, it can even increase the value of your home.

Speaking of your home, if you go back into the kitchen for a moment, you will notice perhaps a coffee carafe, or a teapot, or a ceramic tea strainer - alongside of the more humble ceramic dish or cup.

Let's leave the indoors for a moment, and take a trip outside. Let's go over to the garden, and what do we find there? Delightful objects like ceramic bird baths, ceramic garden stools, garden pixies and gnomes, all made out of ceramic materials.

While we are outside, let's go to the front of the house. What's there? Ceramic house numbers, sometimes incorporating even the street name and family last name, proudly displayed. And there's spot in his doghouse. What's that I see beside him? Well, I'll be doggoned - it's a ceramic dog bowl!

Now let's go to work. Business and industry has always been a user of ceramics. Piezo ceramic elements - you will find these in many high-tech devices, like medical equipment, computers, furnaces - even your backyard BBQ. Ceramic ball bearings are used in many devices - from your family car to a child's skateboard.

Well, our tour is complete. As you see, ceramics do TRULY fill our world. And our world would be poorer without them.
