Cell Phone Safety Tips For Equestrians

USRider provides roadside emergency assistance for equestrians. Members simply call the toll-free number on the back of their membership card from their cell phone. USRider is in its ninth year providing emergency roadside assistance to horse owners. This is all well and fine as long as your cell phone battery isnt dead.

Cell Phone Safety Tips for Equestrians

Quite frequently, we hear from members who have a roadside emergency that point out that the battery is very low on their cellular phones, said Mark Cole, managing member for USRider. A cellular phone is of no use when the battery is dead, and worse yet, we cannot assist if you cannot contact us, added Cole.

You start your trip with a fully charged cell phone battery. So why does the battery suddenly show a low charge? Unfortunately, being in rural areas can affect the charge life of your cell phone battery. The cell phone actually uses up more battery life searching for a viable network. While the battery life of some cell phones is better than others, the new Smartphones tend to be battery suckers.

USRider recommends you keep a car charger in your vehicle. I am suggesting you keep another in your saddlebag. Car chargers are cheap! You can usually get a car charger for $7-$11 at batteries4less.com, as well as spare battery chargers.

You can conserve the battery charge with some simple steps. USRider suggests following some simple guidelines that will help conserve the battery life:

* Adjust the brightness of your screen to a dimmer setting;
* Set your back-light to cut off after 15 seconds or less;
* Switch the vibrate function off on your phone, using just the ring tone. The vibrate function uses additional battery power. Keep the ring tone volume as low as possible; and
* If you are using your phone for e-mail, adjust the e-mail update time to 30 minutes or longer.

If your battery is old, it wont hold a charge as long as when it was new. The average life of a lithium ion cell phone battery is between 18-24 months. It may be time to buy a new replacement battery for your cell phone or Smartphone. Consider having 2 batteries and keeping them both charged for your trip. Regardless of how you prepare for emergencies, keeping a fully charged cell phone with you only makes sense. When I was little, my grandmother used to take us on outings for the day. We would get up early and drive old mining and back country roads to ghost towns in the Gold Country. We always had an emergency kit with spare blankets, road-side flares, water and food. These days, a fully charged cell phone would be part of the kit for sure.
