Celica, Gracefully Powerful

By:

Curves and Lines
The Toyota Celica design is now about 12 years old and has somehow still looks like it was drawn in blueprint two days ago. It is a sharp angular but curvy car and the lines are blended tastefully with the curves. The car has a non-functional hood scoop on the GT-S model. The Celica looks fast and has the bite to back up its bark. Although the Acura Integra is faster, the Celica looks better, has better resale and is a bit more comfortable and ergonomic. The engine in the Celica is two different versions of the 1.8 litre. In one guise it makes 140 horsepower.
A used Celica engine from 2000-2005 will fit the 2006 model. This is the GT model with rear drum brakes and comes in a 5 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic. The 190 horsepower version has disc brakes all around and comes with a six speed close ratio manual gearbox for improved acceleration. The Celica has found its home in the street racing crowd as it is easily modified and several aftermarket performance based enhancements are available to increase power.
Handling and Suspension
The Celica rides on McPherson struts in front and a rear multi-link setup. It has a cost-effective suspension, but thanks to Toyota's engineering brilliance, more aggressive shock damping and large antiroll bars on the front and rear axle allow maximum grip and keep the tires perpendicular to the road. The tires offered are 205/55/16 inch Bridgestone all seasons and are up to the task of sticking the car to te road.
Ownership and Driving Experience
The Celica is relatively practical. Although it is a 2+2 coupe, meaning the rear seat only seats 2 passengers, the car has a roomy trunk. Space up front is also pretty good and the driver's seat adjusts 6 ways. Other features are a CD player with 6 speakers, leather seats, an optional sunroof and electric mirrors, windows and door locks. An alarm system is also available.
Celica Today
The Celica was dincontinued in the American market in 2006, but can still be had in the Japanese market up to 2008. A new model is likely to be released in 2012 which features more aggressive styling and will be rear wheel drive. This model should rival the Hyundai Genesis Coupe in drifting. The new Celica should be balanced and more appealing with more horsepower, a better matched gearbox and refreshened styling. It should also be priced near the same value as the Genisis Coupe so the potential for profit for Toyota is high.
