Eid Al Fitr is a special holiday celebrated by Muslims the world over at the conclusion of the fasting period during Ramadan which is considered a holy month. The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is believed to be the month that the Holy Quran was revealed and during this 29 or 30 day period Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. This fasting phase comes to an end on the first day of the next month known as Shawwal in the Islamic calendar. It is on this day that Eid Al Fitr or festival of breaking the fast is celebrated.
The custom of Eid Al Fitr is believed to have been first started by Prophet Muhammad and during this period which can last between one to three days, devotees show gratitude to God and are motivated to forgive wrongdoings of others and to put aside their differences.
While the traditions and customs followed by Muslims slightly vary from country to country at this time, the general rituals that are observed are the same. It is the general custom for Muslims to rise before dawn and in keeping with the activities followed by the Prophet Muhammad, devotees cleanse themselves and offer a pre-sunrise prayer known as Salatul Fajr.
Followers then assemble together either in specific outdoor areas or at mosques where they perform the special Eid prayer followed by a sermon or khutbah which offers instructions on the rituals to be performed during the day as well as a prayer to God asking for blessings and forgiveness for all living beings. After the service, Muslims visit and meet up with friends and family or even host large celebratory events at homes or even larger venues which are rented out for the occasion.
