Celebrating Navidad In Northern Mexico

Celebrating Navidad In Northern Mexico

By:

When most people think of Christmas, their minds fill with thoughts of snow, mittens and frostbitten noses. In northern Mexico Christmas is just the opposite-replace snow with sand, mittens with swimsuits, and frostbitten noses with sun-kissed cheeks. Sound like paradise? What better way could there be to celebrate Christmas than by lying on your back, under a warm sunny sky with the sound of waves in the background?

In northern Mexico, Navidad, as Christmas is called there, is still about tradition. Celebrating the Christmas holidays in northern Mexico can be a heartwarming experience. Below are some of the best northern Mexico towns in which to celebrate Navidad.

San Carlos, Sonora, California

Celebrating Christmas by the Sea of Cortes is an experience that is hard to beat. In San Carlos, located a couple of hours south of Rocky Point, local Mexicans and Gringos alike take Christmas very seriously and festivities span the entire month of December. One of the traditions is the Yacht Club Parade of Lights, where local boat owners decorate their boats in Christmas lights and parade around the port on Christmas Eve for those on shore to admire. Other activities include Christmas markets, carol singing and special dinners organized by local hotels and restaurants. Traditional festivities include the celebration of the Virgin on December 12th, followed by a week of traditional posada celebrations.

San Carlos is a wonderful place to spend a month or more. Yet since it is only a half days drive from the U.S. border (250 miles from Nogales, Arizona), it is also a great destination for those that only have a short time for vacation.

Cabo San Lucas, Baja California

Each year, many people head south to the southern tip of Baja to celebrate Christmas in Cabo San Lucas. Cabo is a great place, to not only witness traditional Mexican festivities, but also to enjoy gorgeous December weather on the beach. Here's just a sampling of events planned for Christmas 2010 in Cabo San Lucas:

December 1st - Sabor a Cabo: an event held at the Hilton Hotel on the Corridor starting at 7PM. Tickets are $100 per person and include food from over 40 restaurants and live music by Aleks Syntek.

December 7th - Christmas Fiesta at Shoppes at Palmilla - 6 PM until 9 PM. Partake in Christmas merry-making while getting your Christmas shopping done. Shoppes at Palmilla is one of Cabo's premier shopping destinations, with boutique shops set in a Spanish hacienda-style building, surrounded by lush gardens and exclusive restaurants.

December 10th - 5th Annual Dressed to the K9's Fundraiser. This is Cabo's premier annual charity event, held at the Quinta Cangrejo in the Punta Ballena Resort. The event costs $125 a person and runs from 6:30 PM until 10 PM. Once inside, you'll enjoy premium cocktails, wine and beer, live music and shows, gourmet food and a silent auction.

Alamos, Sonora

Alamos offers a lovely backdrop for a Christmas getaway. Many of the boutique hotels offer special Christmas packages and restaurants serve delicious Christmas dinners. The Hacienda de los Santos and the Posada Tacubaya, two colonial hotels that are located in the heart of downtown Alamos, offer special packages over the Christmas holidays for both couples and families. Many also come to Alamos during December to enjoy the local birding.

Birding tours are offered that allow visitors to see many species that flock to Alamos for the winter. If you are looking for a quiet place to spend Christmas in beautiful, natural surroundings, be sure and check out what Alamos has to offer.

Escaping to a northern Mexico town for the Christmas holiday makes for a fun road trip. There is no rain during this time of year, making driving even easier. Take the toll roads to save time since you won't run into slow village traffic. This will eliminate unnecessary stops. Be sure and get your Mexican auto insurance online before you head out. If you plan on being in Mexico for a while, you may want to consider travelers insurance. The Christmas holidays are quickly approaching. Start planning now. Book your rooms as soon as possible, so you can escape the cold and enjoy your holidays in sunny Mexico.
