Made up of around 1,192 small islands, the Maldives is a tropical paradise that is known for its pristine beaches, exciting water sports and rich marine biodiversity. Translated to "garland of islands", this picturesque holiday destination also hosts several colourful events which give one a chance to experience some local culture.

One such popular event is the Maldives Independence Day which is celebrated annually on the 26th of July. This public holiday which is marked by colourful parades and festivities, commemorates the freedom and full independence gained from the islands then colonial authority, the British.

During the course of its history, the Maldives has been ruled by such nations as the Dutch and the Portuguese before coming into an agreement with the British in 1887. According to the agreement, Maldivians had the freedom to handle internal affairs, while the British had the authority to get involved in matters concerning dealings with foreign countries. Part of the agreement was that the British would also provide the country with protection from outside invading forces.

This changed on the 26th of July in 1965 when the island gained its independence and became a fully autonomous nation. Following this, in 1968, Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir became the first president of the Republic of Maldives which is now a fully independent country that is a member of such organizations as the UN, SAARC and the Commonwealth.

Blending traditional and modern elements, current Maldives Independence Day celebrations are centred around Republic Square. Here one can witness a march-past by the National Security Services as well as the National Cadet Corps, while there are also several colourful parades and processions featuring school children. A special independence celebration is held at the National Stadium which is inaugurated by the countrys president. The event is also attended by foreign statesmen and women as they are treated to a variety of dances and other lively performances.
